Crypto Tax Updates for Kraken Users
Kraken now reports your exchange activity directly to the IRS. Here is what changed for the 2025 and 2026 tax years, and what it means when you file.
Scope and caveats: these rules apply to Kraken exchange activity (Kraken.com, Kraken Pro and the related apps) and depend on your jurisdiction, residency and account type. The amount on Form 1099-DA is gross proceeds, not gain or loss. This page is an independent summary and is not tax advice.
- Kraken began reporting sales and dispositions of digital assets to the IRS on Form 1099-DA for tax year 2025 — gross proceeds only. Kraken Support
- From tax year 2026, Kraken also reports cost basis, gains and losses, and holding periods for positions acquired on or after 1 January 2026. Kraken Learn
- Staking rewards of $600 or more trigger a Form 1099-MISC and are taxable as ordinary income when received, even if you never sell. IRS Rev. Rul. 2023-14
- Self-custody and DeFi activity in Kraken Wallet and Ink is not covered by the current broker reporting rules, so it will not appear on your 1099-DA. Kraken Blog
